Nicéphore Niépce Knows Best

(The shot above was taken in 1826 by the father of photography, Nicéphore Niépce, and is one of the first 2 photos ever recorded)

Yep, I know you thought Fox Talbot started photography, but true nerds attribute the birth to Nicéphore Niépce.

I get in to discussions with other photographers about method. Some photographers will demand you “study what is in magazines, especially the magazines from Europe! that is what is fashionable! that is how you become a fashion photographer!” I think that is stupid and short sided advice. A great photographer is a great artist and a great artist is always ahead of the curve, not sitting on the bell made by someone else.

Copying someone else’s work just teaches you to be a copycat. Some people say “No! It helps you understand light!” I think it just teaches you to be a technician, a mechanic of light. We need technicians and mechanics to do the dirty work but the biggestA mechanic might make a discovery, but an artist and inventor will change the world. Innovation comes from doing and following your own path. Technicians and mechanics are paid well, but true artists live a much richer life.

So thank you Nicéphore Niépce for NOT copying everyone else who just traced pictures from camera obscura’s. Thanks for doing something new.
