Video: Phoenix- 1901 Bo Flex’d (Passion Pit Remix)

Posted in Music, Video by Michael Donovan on October 28, 2009

I was looking up other new music when I stumbled on this one:

1901 is forever-old at this point but this remix was released about a week ago. I’m a huge fan of the music by Phoenix and I am always excited to see what they come up with next and who they inspire- imagine the sounds coming out influenced by this in the next 10 years!

Also- I have to say that I love Passion Pits sound too. They remind me of a road trip to Seattle I took when I was 21 with Allison, a girl I was dating at the time. We went to her cousin’s house and he had all this mixing gear in their apartment by University Bridge. It just has that ‘fresh and living” sound to it…

It’s new so it doesn’t have an official music video yet, but it sounds good and I’m sure it will find good visuals soon. I love it when you have genres collaborating together.

Let me start by saying “I don’t really like this song that much.” It’s OK, but it doesn’t strike me as anything special or particularly significant. My email is down and I got distracted by Facebook when I saw a friend from back home posted this song. all I could think was “Fuck! Have I been in the city THAT long or is she really singing that sloooooowwwwww?!” I grew up in an area where “face paced” meant you did three things in one day; now I live in a city where we have our own internationally recognized length of time that is different than any other city in the world (of course I am speaking of the New York Minute).

It is nice to think about home. I want to visit my friends and family soon. But this also reminded me that I enjoy the faster pace of NY. I like doing 3 things in one minute. I heard someone say “living three years in NY is like living 15 years anywhere else in the world.” I can already see that as pretty true… and now I realize I can happily live at least another 200 years.

Los Campesinos!: The Sea Is a Good Place to Think of the Future

Posted in Video by Michael Donovan on September 27, 2009

Background music for retouching:

Lyrics:
I grabbed hold of her wrist and my hand closed from tip to tip
I said “you’ve taken the diet too far, you have got to let it slip”
But she’s not eating again, she’s not eating again, she’s not eating again, she’s not eating again.
I ask her to speak French and then I need her to translate, I get the feeling she makes the meaning more significant.
She was always far too pretty for me to believe in a single word she said, believe a word she said.
At fourteen her mother died in a routine operation, from allergic reaction to a general anesthetic. She spent the rest of her teens experimenting with prescriptions, in a futile attempt to know more than the doctors.
She said one day to leave her, sand up to her shoulders waiting for the tide
to drag her to the ocean, to another sea’s shore.
This thing hurts like hell,
but what did you expect?

And all you can hear is the sound of your own heart
And all you can feel is your lungs flood and the blood course
But oh I can see five hundred years dead set ahead of me
Five hundred behind,
A thousand years in perfect symmetry

Best known left wrist right finger, through all the Southern States, on every video games machine they call her triple A.
There were racists on the radio trying to give up smoking, the chat show host, he joked “you have to wait for the government program”.
You talk about your politics, and I wonder if you could be one of them, but you could never kiss a Tory boy without wanting to cut off your tongue again.
A good place to look to the future is when you are sat at the sea, with the salt up to your ankles and a view of the end of the pier, you may look down at your model’s feet and wish that you’d just float away, and the weather here is overcast and the sea is the same shade of grey, so the landscape before you looks just like the edge of the world, but to the left side and the right side, either way is a crazy golf course.
The sea is a good place to think of the future.

And all you can hear is the sound of your own heart
And all you can feel is your lungs flood and the blood course
But oh I can see five hundred years dead set ahead of me
Five hundred behind,
A thousand years in perfect symmetry
A thousand years no getting rid of me
A thousand years in perfect symmetry.

Research for Shoot

Posted in Beauty, Photography, Video, art by Michael Donovan on September 25, 2009

I was asked to shoot an editorial by a fashion magazine and David Hamilton’s work came up in the pre-planning phase. I started doing more research on him and found this video. His work is controversial and often considered obscene in the US and UK. I’ll disagree with that assessment.

Just a few videos of people who help add to my argument about the Pacific Northwest. These are just a few of the people from the NW:

VIDEO: The Killers – When you were Young

Posted in Video by Michael Donovan on August 10, 2009

It’s been replaying in my head so I thought I would share a retro classic! I think I like this because of the overall mood and tone of the lyrics and instrumentals; but the video itself has a good story-line with a great sense of fashion and styling.

Video: Killer Queen (Dutch TV 1974 Version)

Posted in Video by Michael Donovan on August 5, 2009

I’m have been inspired by some conversations I’ve had lately and the only that I could think to sum everything up was “Killer Queen” by Queen. Expect wilder, wetter, darker, sexier, heavier, dirtier, more expensive, more raw, more untouchable, more timeless, and deeper work from me and the teams. Give me a little lead time but I’m going to break my stuck-stick and go my own way again…..

video: Brand New Key by The Oh My God Girls

Posted in Video by Michael Donovan on August 4, 2009

My friend >Matt Griffo is in town. I met him while I was doing comedy and working at > Second City in Chicago. He was being featured at a small club on Bowery so I tagged along. I haven’t been in the comedy world in quite a while but seeing the NY scene made remember what I loved about it.

The show started off with >Rachel Trachtenburg and her band “The Oh My God Girls.” It was crazy to see a 15 year old and two 13 year old kids perform in a comedy venue at 11:00pm. They’re just kids but they are using their summer vacation, putting in time, and doing what they love. Their show was followed by a 14 year old boy who used the mic to do some songs; he reminded me a lot of David Bowie. Again, another kid spending his days practicing and his nights getting stage time. There are adults who are not happy with where they are or wonder when they are going to get their “big break,” meanwhile these kids are MAKING their big break!

Their music is not for everyone but, when they polish it and find their audience, they stand a very good chance of being on top! Good luck kids!

I Met the Walrus

Posted in Culture, Video by Michael Donovan on July 2, 2009

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrator James Braithwaite have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short.

A 2nd video for Monday… This last week was pretty strange with the deaths of Neda, Farrah, Ed, Michael, Billy… we need to get it together and move forward to make this a happier place.
